21st United Nations Day of Vesak wraps up in Wuxi, China

The 21st United Nations Day of Vesak opened on Tuesday in Wuxi, Jiangsu Province, drawing nearly 1,000 representatives from 67 countries and regions. The event, which consludes today on the 28th, was hosted by the International Council for the Day of Vesak and organized by the Buddhist Association of China and the Jiangsu Buddhist Association.

In a congratulatory letter, Wang Huning, a senior Chinese leader and chairman of the CPPCC National Committee, praised Vesak as “an important festival for Buddhists worldwide to commemorate the birth, enlightenment, and nirvana of the Buddha.” He noted that the International Council has “promoted the Buddhist values of compassion and peace” and contributed to “enhancing friendship among peoples, safeguarding world peace, and promoting common development.”

Wang emphasized China’s commitment to the United Nations system and global governance, citing President Xi Jinping’s initiatives on development, security, civilization, and governance.
