Good morning! Naivasha GK, Kenya’s largest maximum-security prison located just north of the capital Nairobi, is using a mindfulness training program to control violence and bring inmates and guards closer together.
Dr. Inmaculada Adarves-Yorno, a lecturer in leadership studies at Britain’s University of Exeter, introduced the idea to the prison’s management. The mindfulness program seeks to improve prison culture by inspiring the inmates to become mindful leaders. The mindfulness sessions are led by specially trained guards, who encourage prisoners and guards alike to share their fears and vulnerabilities to bridge the gulf between people on either side of the bars.
Korean Buddhist monk Venerable Jino has dedicated his life to helping Vietnam and to improving the lives of Vietnamese migrants in South Korea. To manifest his efforts, Ven. Jino has been working in cooperation with Making Dreams Come True, a private organization based in the city of Gumi, in North Gyeongsang Province, which provides support for migrant workers in South Korea. But in order to achieve his objectives, Ven Jino has had to go the extra mile—literally, by running charity marathons as a demonstration of his sincerity.
To date, Ven. Jino has run some 15,000 kilometers across Cambodia, Ecuador, Germany, Nepal, South Korea, Sri Lanka, and Vietnam—averaging around 50 kilometers per day—since 2011, and in the process raising about 400 million won (US$358,000).
Maharashtra Tourism Development Corp. (MTDC), under the government of the Indian state of Maharashtra, has drawn up a plan to make the Buddhist heritage sites of Ajanta and Ellora iconic tourist and pilgrimage destinations along India’s growing Buddhist circuit.
To put Ajanta and Ellora on the international Buddhist tourism map, MTDC co-organised the 6th International Buddhist Conclave 2018 in Aurangabad, in association with India’s Ministry of Tourism. The conclave, which took place on 23–26 August, was attended by Buddhist delegates, monks, and officials from more than 12 Buddhist-populated countries.
