Sera Khandro’s Prophecy: The Bhutanese Lineage of Yonphula

What do Sera Khandro, Dudjom Rinpoche, and the Yonphula lineage holders of Bhutan have in common? The answer unfolded for me recently, during an intimate interview with the present Yonphula Rinpoche, a living bearer of a prophecy written over a century ago.

A bittersweet parting gift

Years ago, I met Christina Monson, a devoted Nyingma practitioner and seasoned translator who had studied under Chatral Rinpoche (1913–2015). Before she passed away in 2023, she entrusted me with a precious copy of her translated short life story of the great dakini and female tertön, Sera Khandro (1892–1940): The Excellent Path of Devotion. Its striking crimson cover bears the radiant golden seed syllable “BAM,” a sacred symbol of primordial awareness.

At that time, I deeply appreciated the gift but could not fully grasp its meaning. I wondered how these ancient visions spoken by a Tibetan female master could still resonate with modern spiritual practitioners in our contemporary world. Little did I know this small sacred volume would become my personal key to understanding a living Bhutanese Dharma lineage destined for our chaotic era.

Sera Khandro remains one of the most vital and revered female treasure revealers in the Nyingma school. Her verses are far more than poetic literature; they are precise, unaltered prophecies outlining future Dharma revelations. Centuries ago, she encoded a clear vision foretelling the establishment of a monastery at the location that is known today as the hilly and scenic Yonphula.

It was Dudjom Rinpoche (1904–1987) who later fully interpreted and verified Sera Khandro’s hidden prophecy during his sacred retreat at Padmasambhava Lake in Himachal Pradesh. He delivered a direct prophetic announcement to Togden Lama Karpo (Tshewang Pejor)—Yonphula Rinpoche’s father. According to the decoded prophecy, Dudjom Rinpoche explicitly told the White Lama that within exactly six months, he would officially inherit and receive a monastery that had been languishing at Yonphula with no steward.

What followed was a profoundly mysterious, miraculous unfolding of pure karmic alignment. Exactly six months after Dudjom Rinpoche’s prophecy, Bhutan’s Central Monastic Body formally and legally offered the entire Yonphula Monastery to Lama Karpo, precisely as foretold. No human arrangement, no political negotiation, no institutional planning could explain this perfectly timed spiritual transmission. It was pure prophecy manifesting physically on earth.

After this supernatural inheritance, the lineage flourished magnificently. With the monastery at Yonphula firmly rooted in the family lineage of Lama Karpo, the clan took on the name of the area. The monastery became home to a community of practicing yogis, adepts of Nyingma tantra. The fifth king of Bhutan, HM Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, further supported the family and helped the present Yonphula Rinpoche to establish the Yonphula Dharma College, cementing the lineage’s official mission for future generations. Every stage confirms how human devotion simply aligns with divine foresight.

Implications for our world

Today, this living lineage carries an urgent global mission. During my interview with Yonphula Rinpoche, I asked the vital question all modern practitioners ponder: amid rising chaos, frequent natural disasters, and elemental imbalance plaguing our planet, what spiritual practice can alleviate global suffering?

Rinpoche answered without hesitation. He explained that Sera Khandro’s prophecy did not only foresee a monastery’s birth. It foretold a precise remedy for our era: the elemental Padmasambhava practice. This unique emanation of Guru Rinpoche directly harmonizes the five elements, calming environmental turbulence and protecting beings from natural catastrophes.

Sera Khandro’s vision has woven a complete, unbroken Dharma circle across centuries. What began as a female tertön’s sacred words now lives on through the Yonphula lineage—an enduring spiritual sanctuary, a miraculously fulfilled prophecy, and humanity’s hopeful path toward healing planetary suffering.
