His Eminence the Laytshog Lopen of Bhutan is on an official visit to Malaysia this week, meeting Buddhist leaders, religious institutions, and prominent figures in business and civic life as part of a broader effort to deepen ties between the two countries.
Over several days, the senior Bhutanese monk has toured Buddhist centers and organizations across Malaysia, holding discussions with religious heads and institutional leaders. The exchanges, officials said, have underscored a shared commitment to friendship, cultural understanding, and spiritual dialogue.
Beyond the religious sphere, His Eminence has also met with senior members of the Malaysian nation. He has connected with figures bearing the Tan Sri and Dato honors, and more broadly community and business leaders, strengthening what observers describe as “people-to-people connections” between Bhutan and Malaysia.
In his role as chairman of Shambhala Dzong Ltd. and the Tara Retreat Centre at Gelephu Mindfulness City, His Eminence presented King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck’s vision for the Gelephu project. He emphasized its role in safeguarding Vajrayana Buddhist heritage and promoting spiritual initiatives that blend tradition with modern mindfulness practices.
The visit has included ceremonial duties as well. In Penang, His Eminence presided over a ritual at Drukpa Butterworth, invoking blessings of fortune, wisdom, and prosperity for the local community. Devotees described the ceremony as both spiritually uplifting and a reminder of Bhutan’s enduring Buddhist ties with Malaysia.
Officials and participants alike said the visit reflects a growing emphasis on cultural diplomacy, with Bhutan’s monastic leadership playing a visible role in fostering dialogue and harmony across borders.
